Avoiding Danger from
Underground Services

Breaking New Ground is a DVD produced by the HTMA and Working Well Together that addresses general attitudes and behaviours to digging safely around utility infrastructures.

About the DVD

The DVD is designed to be used both as a tool to raise awareness of the importance of responsible digging and as a training tool for designers, utilities, clients, management, engineers and supervisors and operatives.

We are always mindful of, and encourage everyone in the industry to consider, the balance between the needs of the user and the safety of road workers by consistently maintaining the highest standards, while at the same time improve behaviours to reduce incidents and accidents.

Striking underground utilities creates significant risk to injury and even death to the operatives carrying out the work. Service strikes also cause considerable disruption to the public and substantial cost to industry.

This two-part DVD is designed to raise awareness of the dangers involved and highlight the key steps that can be taken to minimise the risks. Essential viewing for everyone involved in design, planning and carrying out the work.

Part One

An insight into the consequences of service strikes. People with first hand knowledge share their experience of the physical, emotional and financial costs.

Part Two

Part Two covers best practice for ensuring that work is carried out safely. The modular design of this part allows users to selecet the segments appropriate to their audience and where necessary integrate them into a broader training programme.
